International Children’s Book Day is an annual event celebrated on (or around) April 2nd to promote the love for reading among children. It was established in 1967 by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) to encourage children to read more and develop a strong foundation for literacy skills.

The date, April 2nd, was chosen as it coincides with the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, the famous Danish author known for his fairy tales such as “The Little Mermaid” and “The Ugly Duckling”. Andersen’s stories have been translated into numerous languages and have inspired generations of children.

On this day, various activities are organised by schools, libraries, bookstores and other organisations to celebrate the joy of reading. Children are encouraged to explore different genres of books, from picture books and graphic novels to chapter books and non-fiction. They are also introduced to authors from different countries and cultures, giving them a glimpse into the diverse world of literature.

One of the main objectives of International Children’s Book Day is to promote cultural understanding through literature. Department for Education research suggests that, by the age of seven, the gap in the vocabulary known by children in the top and bottom quartiles is something like 4,000 words (children in the top quartile know around 7,000 words).
